It’s the time of year when Yorkshire decorates the cities, towns and villages yellow in support of the amazing cycle event the ‘Tour de Yorkshire’. Some 252 world class riders, from 36 top teams will follow the 711k four stage route. This year day four starts in Halifax, with the leg aptly labelled the Yorkshire Terrier!
Bramleys is supporting Le Tour with our Halifax branch window already dressed. The challenging final stage (with some significant gruelling climbs) sets off from the starting hub at the Piece Hall at 12.10 pm.
It promises to be a memorable day for all who visit. We’ll be watching to see if last year’s winner, Belgian rider Serge Pauwels, manages to keep a hold of the title for team Dimension Data.
Sadly, the women’s race doesn’t visit us, but you can watch this two-day event on ITV4.
The Yorkshire Terrier covers 189.5k of scenic Yorkshire countryside taking the riders through Hebden Bridge, Haworth, Skipton and through the Yorkshire Dales. It’s then onto Otley before crossing the finish line in Leeds.
Even more than the 2.2million spectators that attended last year are expected to turn up for the event, which has Yorkshire Air Ambulance as their official charity this year. Rolling road closures will be in place around an hour before the riders are due, apart from the start and finish events and some of the climbs.
Not for the faint hearted, those who want to get a bit closer to the action can book the Tour de Yorkshire Ride. This offers brave souls the opportunity to cycle some of the same roads the pros do before they get there, complete with a cheering finish line and waiting crowds.
